Windsurf and downwind paddle

Another good day in paradise.

This am mat went to the local store to buy breakfast. he brought back some of the once a week made croissants  which were amazing. after breakfast we chilled for a while surfing the net, talking and hanging out.

Mat said, "hey, do you want to try windsurfing?" I said sure, even though i was tired and wanted to just lay around. I'm pretty exhausted haha. this has been a marathon vacation haha. I had tried windsurfing once before, two years ago with mat for probably 30 minutes. I did pretty well at first, but then when i changed directions to come back, not so much ahah. I think I tried it for 30 minutes until my arms were dead from pulling the sail up. It was really fun, I could get into this sport. it's super hard and challenging. Too bad it is so expensive to get into!

After that we BBQ'd the rhino fish that the neighbor brought over this am. It was pretty good, i've certainly never tried it before but mat said it was his favorite. It had a different taste, but was pretty good. we had it with rice and a couple kinds of bread that were left over from lunch. Mat said that you have to be careful with some of the fish here. I guess some of the corals are poisoned form runoff, or trash that is thrown in. if you eat the fish who have the poison you get really sick for months. Parrot fish eat the reef, and other fish eat the parrot fish, so all of them can get it. the way you can tell if the fish has it or not is by putting the fish on the ground, and waiting to see if flys or ants come to it. if they do then you know its fine.. awesome test, huh? I saw some ants come up to the left overs so i felt better.

After eating a fish that I wasn't so sure about due to mat's story we hung out for a while more. At about
4 i had decided to go snorkeling, but mat asked if i wanted to go paddling outside.. and I said okay sure even though i was still pretty tired from trying to windsurf again. We got ready to go out in the water, which includes me putting sunblock on thick, grabbing a hat and sunglasses. (So far I haven't got a sunburn yet, awesome.) We started off the paddle up wind, we planned to go down to a reef opening, paddle down wind in the ocean and then paddle back in on the next reef opening. The upwind paddle was total hell. a few times i wanted to turn back. we had oncoming swells and 30 mph winds. It was very hard, and tiring. I would have been fine if mat wanted to paddle back. I fell once and the oc1 almost blew away in the wind. that would have sucked. I finally caught up to mat and then we made the trip through the pass. I took over the SUP and mat took the oc1. i paddled like hell to get through the pass. I didnt want the waves to take me out if a big set of waves came through. I made it, and then got to enjoy paddling the sup through serious wind and swell. at this point i needed a breather. I had been paddling up wind and up swell for over a hour. We chill for a couple minutes and then we were off to go down wind in the open ocean. the swells were pretty huge and the wind was strong. this was my first real down wind paddle. so much fun, i loved catching the big open ocean swells with the board and surfing them. I started to do really good, i think mat was impressed because it takes a lot of balance to stay on the board in these conditions. I surprised myself to be honest. we made it to the pass we were going to re-enter the lagoon on but i wanted more, so we kept going to the next pass aka the big pass. Half way there the swell dropped, wind stopped, and a head swell came in. this made the paddle pretty tough and tiring. the fun swell surfing time was over. the big pass was a lot longer paddle, maybe another 2 miles. We made it to the pass and then mat took a few waves on the sup while i paddled around with the oc1. the left hand wave was pretty awesome. you could surf it for so long, and it also got pretty hollow. the people surfing it were all locals i guess. i'd love to be a local here haha. the rest of the paddle in was on glassy lagoon with a slight tail wind. perfect. we made it back in right as it was getting pretty dark.. i chilled in the lagoon a bit longer just to watch the stars and the moon. it was pretty dope. I could easily have fallen asleep there. 78 deg water, and 80 deg air, at dark?

After this we made pasta and then got ready to goto sleep. i surfed the net for a couple hours, edited pics and then wrote this up. lates.
