South point, BBQ

We woke up crazy early today, at 5am. This was rough to say the least. We got up to go for a boat ride with the neighbor. He was super stoked to go, and was planning to fish while we shot pics and snorkeled.

We had lots of fun taking aerial pics, taking turns deicing how to frame the shots.. it was fun. This part of the island has really no people on it. Its probably 10 miles from the nearest road and any houses you see are only accessible by boat. The neighbor caught 5 fish while mat and I were shooting photos! he ended up giving us a couple to eat.. they look delicious. We walked on a motu from where we parked the boat all the way to where the ocean was breaking on the outer reef. you can kind of see this spot in some of the pics below. This are is super special because most people on this island have never seen it or been to it in person. It is super sharky and tons of fish are there. I watched my back while i was snorkeling haha. We are really stoked to see how the air shots came out. we had perfect weather.

On the way back to the house we stopped the boat at one of the neighbors friends places. It was a really cool strip of land 45x300meters, all the way up the mountain. they said they bought it for 180k us in 2000. since then they added fresh water plumbing to the property which i guess makes it work 2-3 times more. it was a ton of land! if you planted a garden, and fished, you would never need to leave this spot and would never need a job. everything is so fertile here, its insane. The even had a semi freshwater river that flowed through part of their land. they also had the first riding lawnmower that I've seen here. Most people just use weed eaters to mow their lawns.. i can't understand that esp with how huge the yards are here!

After we got back we cleaned the fish and then got ready to goto the bbq. We got picked up for the bbq at around 11:30am. on the way there i actually saw a big pasture that had cows on it. this is the first time ive seen any livestock here besides chickens. By this this point we still hadn't ate lunch yet so we were starving. they served rice, a few types of meat, chicken chow mein, potato salad (tahiti style i guess), and three types of cakes hah. We ate so much that mat and I have no interest in eating dinner haha.

At the bbq there were a ton of flies. I guess on an island you just get used to the bugs. I hated having the flies always land on my legs. it super annoys me. But i could see that the locals here didn't even flinch. the other thing that caught me off guard is that the local flies like to land on you cuts. and they do this in large numbers! it freaked me out, but i guess it is normal here. My instinct is that you don't want this to happen, what if they lay eggs? but my friend reassured me that its nothing to worry about. it made me feel like a real city person to have this conversation haha. Everyone at the bbq spoke french, so i only understood about 30% of what was being said. I always tell myself that I need to learn french before i come back here, but i have yet to do it. I need to make that a goal of mine before I come again..

After the party we came back to the house and chilled for a while. i went for a sunset snorkel which felt kind of creepy. The water was hard to see through so who knows what was out there. i was also looking for fish to see if there was anything worth fishing for.. I want to catch dinner.

I can't believe two weeks has gone by so fast!!

Its 10pm and I am going to bed… this is so early for me. peace.
