Easy day today. I went for a AM paddle to the reef to record some videos. I found an awesome spot that had so much coral. it was insane. the coral fields seemed to go on forever. While I was out there the customs/border patrol jet flew right over me, probably 200 ft off the ground. I was underwater and it sounded like a boat drove right over me, totally freaked me out haha. I swam all over the reef, for probably 45 minutes, and stopped just before i was burnt bad. Mat went out for a morning paddle in the OC1. I was going to join him but I decided to stay back and take it easy, shave, and chill.
Mat went to lunch and to work a bit at ARE, so I got a sandwich from the chinese guy truck. The sandwich is pretty interesting. it is french bread, which chicken, ketchup, and a few fries. It tastes good though, and it is cheap.
After that we chilled for while in the backyard, trying to stay out of the heat. Mat took the wind surf out for a while and made a friend with a rich guy and his sail boat. We realized that the tin roof over the dining room table is like a heater, so simply going onto the grass under the tree made it a ton cooler. I felt the backside of the tin roof, it was burning hot. I said, i bet we can fry an egg on it. and so we got the ladder out and tried. mat dropped the first egg, it went right off the roof, the second egg slid right down the slanted roof. I told mat to find a way to prop it up but his plan didn't work too well. it went right off the roof and onto my flip flops haha. It did look like what was left of the egg was indeed cooking. They could make so much power here with soloar, the sun is insane. My hat and vibrams are fading to a dull black just from letting them dry in the sun.. it is crazy.
In the evening mat wanted to try the aliah again, and I wanted to fish. I fished for a while in the back yard but got not bites. I decided to take the SUP out and bring the fishing pole, and then to paddle out to where mat was surfing. I got out there, tried to fish from my board, dropped the pole in the water once (thankfully it was shallow), and caught nothing. I did have a 3 ft barracuda jump right by my bail, maybe he chased off the fish I could have caught.
The reason why I wanted to goto the pass tonight was because this is when the sharks are most active. It wasn't too windy so the visibility is much better. So I'm out there paddling, my line in the water and I am dragging my lures around the reef pass. I see some shark fins and some slashing, whoa, i though i better not fall in here. This was a turbulent area where the waves come through so it is pretty easy to fall in at any time. I paddled up and down the pass about three times. On the last pass I was only 5 ft away from the sharks. The fish that the sharks were chasing were in big schools, the sharks would thrash around, chasing the fish. The fish looked like a tornado spinning and the sharks were almost a blur from how fast they could move around. I wanted to put my gopro in so bad but didn't want to risk falling into a feeding frenzy. We might go back to try to get that shot. If i hadn't been trolling with the fishing line, i might have tried to get the shot of the sharks dinner time.
Mat caught a few waves on the crazy hard to surf aliah. I need to make one of those boards when i get back.
After that we started to make dinner only to find that we were out of gas for the stove. .. so mat wen down the street to get poisson cru a le chinones, and curry prawns. They were delicious!
After that we cleaned up and went to bed. we need to get up early tomorrow so its time to sleep.
